Staying Positive Even When Life is Tough

Believe in Yourself! Stay Positive

Life can be a wild journey full of ups and downs. For some of us, it can seem like the downs seem to outnumber the ups. Between jobs, relationships, money, family, and health issues, stress seems to bombard us from every angle. And, when it comes to the bad stuff, when it rains, it pours. Often, when the stresses and disappointments of life seem to keep piling up, it can be really easy to loose faith in ourselves and give in to thinking that we are doomed to failure and that fate has it out for us. However, buying into this defeatist attitude will lead to nothing but more failure and heartache. The trick to anything in life is staying positive, even when it may seem like the hardest thing in the world to do.

Staying positive is a completely internal process. It may seem that when life is good, being positive is easy but as soon as times get tough, you want to blame your bad mood on your circumstances or the bad hand you were dealt. It’s easy to excuse your bad attitude and blame your circumstances. Unfortunately, this attitude not only hurts your mood, it hurts your chances at pulling yourself out of a bad situation. As soon as you decide that you are a victim of life instead of an active participant, you are doomed to stay down and out.

Staying positive is a choice. You choose to let circumstances control you, or you can choose to control your circumstances. It’s easy to choose to be negative and hung up on the negatives of life, it’s much harder to chose happiness. However, choosing to be positive is synonymous with choosing to believe in the one person who will never let you down: yourself.

Believing in yourself can seem like the hardest thing in the world when times get tough but staying positive is about finding a way to have faith that you can overcome any difficult situation if you want to. The first step in this process is understanding that bad things can often happen to very good people. You must realize that no matter how hard you try to be perfect, failure and disappointment are a part of life and are inescapable for any person. We all struggle and that is OK. No one is expected to be perfect or infallible always. Once you understand that road bumps come and go, you can start letting go of anger at yourself for not being perfect … no one is.

Once you truly accept that bad things happen to everyone, it is time to make a plan. Often, what sends us into a self-defeating spiral is the overwhelming feeling of failure that many people experience when times are hard. When problems seem overwhelming, it can be easy to just wallow underneath them. However, making a plan to overcome a bad situation can give you hope and happiness. Even if a situation is still undesirable, actively working toward a solution will make you feel that you are tackling the problem rather than letting it knock you down.

Once you realize that failures will happen to everyone and that you need a plan to work issues out, the last piece of the puzzle is to realize that you are your best and most reliable ally. Never doubt that you can overcome your problems and that you can choose how great your life will be, as long as you believe in yourself.
