We all know that good nutrition is important in the struggle to stay healthy, but did you know that nutrition can impact your eyesight as well as your body? Eating the right foods can even improve your vision, and it’s never too late to start. It goes a bit further than the old story about rabbits, carrots and eyesight, but carrots are a good place to start!
If you are young, you may think that you don’t have to worry about your vision just yet; this article is more for seniors. However, you should be taking care of your eyes now, so that you won’t have to worry about it when you are older. Don’t be reactive about your health. Be proactive about it. What I mean is, instead of waiting for something to happen and having to fix it then, do things now to prevent those things from ever happening. You can start by just eating some foods regularly that will help to prevent severe vision problems in the future. If you are already elderly, and you have some vision problems, there are still things you can do to improve your vision and make sure further problems don’t happen.
- Eating the right veggies can help your eyesight. Green, leafy vegetables are the best because they provide many of the vitamins and antioxidants needed to prevent eye problems. Other vegetables that help are carrots, bean and peas.
- Some fruits also help to improve eyesight and eye health. All fruit is healthy and beneficial to your whole body, but the ones that you’re your eyes specifically, are apricots, oranges and other citrus fruits, and apples. (An apple a day keeps the eye doctor away too!)
- Certain supplements can help your eyes. You should be taking a good multi-vitamin for general health, and if you are, then you’re already doing something to help your vision. If you want to give your eyes a boost with the specific vitamins that will improve your eye health, you can take Vitamin C, E, beta carotene, and carotenoids. These supplements will help your eye defenses and prevent cataracts. Another lesser known supplement is Bilberry. This plant has been made into an herbal pill and can be found at most drugstores and department stores. It usually sells for around $10 for 60 capsules. Bilberry is a safe supplement that has been proven to improve already failing eyesight.
- Improve your overall health. When you are fit, all of your body parts are healthier as well. If you are eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly, along with taking the right supplements, you are giving your eyes a head start to health.
None of the above tips are 100% guaranteed to keep certain eye problems away for good, no matter how proactive you are. Some things are brought on by genetics or pre-existing conditions, but if you do these 4 things, you will be able to improve your eye health somewhat. Some people will be more successful than others in this area, but even if you can only improve your vision a little, its still better than no improvement at all!
