Algae have been shown in numerous studies to have a vast array of benefits. Some of the top benefits of algae is that it is so mineral dense as well as a rich source of vitamins. However, a new study has shown that a diet including blue-green algae could fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease, as well. Also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, this is a neurological condition which affects the brain in a progressive way. It causes motor neurons, those that control muscle movements, to degenerate over time. About 10% of cases of ALS are caused by genetic factors, while the rest have unknown origins.

Some symptoms of ALS that may be slowed with the benefits of algae include muscle weakening, involuntary twitching, difficulty breathing or swallowing, and eventual paralysis. The head may drop as the neck muscles grow weaker, and there can be speech difficulties exhibited as motor skills become more and more difficult. At the moment, because there is no definitive treatment or cure for ALS, researchers have been on the hunt for any supplements or other treatments that could help slow its spread or alleviate its symptoms.

In a study published in the Open Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Journal, researchers have found that ingesting Spirulina, a certain type of blue-green algae, helped protect mice from developing ALS as well as other neurodegenerative diseases. Rich in antioxidants, the benefits of algae have been shown to include preventing other diseases or disorders such as cancer and heart disease, but this is one of the first notable studies that also shows a link between algae and ALS. It’s suggested that the antioxidants have a strong effect on this link.

These researchers speculate that the benefits of algae such as antioxidants, as well as its anti-inflammatory properties, help protect the motor neurons from free radicals in the body that would otherwise do them harm. This link has been drawn because there are other foods rich in antioxidants, such as blueberries, that exhibit similar effects in mice. As a conclusion to this research study, the scientists have stated that adding Spirulina to the diet in a supplemental form can help reduce the symptoms of ALS, and may even prevent it from being contracted in the first place. However, as the exact cause is currently unknown, it’s difficult to say what the most effective preventive measures are.

In any case, there are also a number of other benefits of algae, which is why it is a prized dietary component in many eastern cultures. In addition to the antioxidant content, it is also rich in B vitamins, calcium, iron, and potassium. It can also add a more balanced flavor to many dishes, because it is savory without having a particularly overpowering aroma unlike other types of seaweed. While clinical trials in humans have yet to be carried out, many have chosen to add Spirulina to their diet to improve health.

In order to be in good healthy you really need to take the time to enjoy your life. If you don’t you are going to be stressed all of the time, and that can lead to many health issues down the road. Make simple changes in your life so that you can enjoy each day, and to appreciate the life that you have been given. The first thing that you want to do is make time to do something for you each and every day, and be sure that you fit it into your list when you are filling out your planner.

Exercising is a great way that you can reduce the stress in your life, get into shape, and get more energy throughout the day. When you are exercising you are reliving the tension that you have built up, you are releasing endorphins that make you happy, and you are getting more energy while you are fighting fatigue. Also the way that you look is going to be a confidence booster for your self-esteem, and feeling good about yourself is only going to make you happier. The happier you are, the more positive outlook you are going to have on everything.

Get rid of all of the things in your life that trigger stress. You obviously can’t quit your job if that stresses you out, but you can take a walk down around the office for 10 minutes to get your blood flowing, or take a few deep breaths to get some new fresh oxygen. Take the time to cut out all of the unnecessary issues you have that stress you out on a daily basis, and once they are gone you are going to be able to live life a lot easier, enjoy it more, and you will be a lot more relaxed.

Take part in fun activities or things that you are good at, like singing in the church choir or taking a cooking class. Whatever makes you happy and makes you feel good about yourself is what you should do. Also surround yourself with good people just like you that want to be happy, and that live happy lives. Attitudes are contagious and you want to make sure that you are catching a good one.

It is important to enjoy each day of your life, because you never know if it is going to be the last one that you get. Use these techniques and increase your quality of life.

Changing your diet can help lower both your blood pressure, and also your cholesterol, so be sure that you do whatever it takes to get a meal plan decided, and to stick with it. A quick way to make a big easy change is by replacing all of the white sugar starches in your diet with fiber rich whole grains. Not only is this going to bring your points down, but you are also going to lose weight, feel better, and have a lot more energy during the day. Fiber plays an important role in getting the heart and body healthy.

The white starches that you are most likely eating are white breads, bagels, cakes, and other foods that are made out of dough. White pastas and noodles are also included in bad foods that you should avoid. Instead of these items you are going to want to eat whole grains, wheat breads, and also brown rice. Making the switch isn’t hard to do; it is just a matter of picking one over the other when you are at the store shopping. Although the sweet treats and cakes look delicious, you really need to stay away from them to get healthy.

Exercising is another important part of getting your blood pressure and your cholesterol under control. Just small increments a few times a day, or a larger session one time a day of cardiovascular activity is going to work. This will give your heart muscle the strength that it needs to function properly and to keep working, and you are also going to lose weight and feel a lot better about yourself. Everything has to come together in order for you to meet your weight loss goals, and this means eating right, exercising, and making smart life decisions every day.

Throughout the day 20 percent of your foods should be whole grains, and then from there you can make other healthy decisions as well. By just changing one minor detail in your diet that you may not even notice you are going to be able to lose weight, lower your blood pressure, and also lower your cholesterol. Find some new recipes and change it up in the kitchen so that you don’t fall of your diet, and be sure that you talk with your physician about how eating whole grains can help your heart health and lower your blood pressure today.

Many people suffer from headaches, and constantly use over the counter medications to relive their pain and symptoms. Sometimes headaches can get so bad that you are unable to do anything all day long, and when this happens to you it is important to find the relief that you need. If you suffer from chronic headaches there are some different things that you can do to get the relief that you are looking for, without putting any drugs into your body.

Some headaches are caused when the neck muscles are weak and have spasms, and strengthening your neck can help eliminate these spasms. The pain may even be coming as from as far as your lower back, then up to your upper back, then to the neck. Use strength building exercises to strengthen your back and neck, it only takes a few minutes a day, a few days a week. Taking away constant strain will also help, so try using a hand free phone device or ergonomic office equipment.

Find the trigger that is causing the headaches and get rid of it. Some people get headaches from drinking caffeine or eating different foods. Sweets, salty foods, or foods that contain MSG are very popular for causing people headaches. If this is you, then try finding out what it is and eliminate it from your diet. Taking them out one food or beverage at a time is the easiest way to target the problem, and to eliminate it. From then on you will need to read labels a lot more closely so you don’t trigger a headache.

Exercising is also going to help you get rid of exercise. Pain killing endorphins are released when you are working out, and you are going to be strengthening your entire body. The stronger you are the less fatigued you will be, and the less headaches you are going to have. Not only exercising at the gym is going to help, but also in the bedroom. Studies have proven that orgasms help eliminate and reduce the symptoms of headaches in women.

When you have chronic headaches and you want to get rid of them don’t grab for a pain relieving medication, instead try these techniques to strengthen your body. Pain relievers are only going to provide temporary relief to your headaches, and these options are going to find you the solutions that you are looking for.

If you have severely painful throbbing and aching headaches that affect one side of your head, you may be suffering from migraines. Symptoms of a migraine included increased pain by movement, sensitivity to light and also to noise, and also feeling nauseas with the headache. The painful symptoms can last only a few hours, or even as long as a few days. Before the migraine symptoms start to set in, and before you get a migraine people often get slight vision impairment and see flashes or spots of light, or they will hear a ringing sound or feel numbness.

Women are more likely to experience these types of headaches then men are, and 18% of women get migraine headaches. She first develops the migraines when she is in her teens, and then will continue to get them throughout her life, even as late as into her 60’s. For some women migraine headaches disappear after going through menopause. For most people who suffer from migraines, they happen only occasionally. There is a small percentage however that will get them more frequently, and sometimes up to or more than 15 days throughout the month. Treatments for migraine headaches will vary.

For minor migraines many people will try to use over the counter medications and methods of treatment to assist with their migraine pain. Going to a doctor is best, since they can give you prescription medications like triptans to give you the migraine relief that you need. Triptans aren’t for all sufferers, although many people have been able to resume their normal activities in as little as a couple hours after taking the medication. Talking with your physician can help you find the different treatments that will work the best for you, and to get the migraine headache relief you need.

The best way to avoid pain that is associated with migraines is to prevent it. Instead of using pain killers on a regular basis, using prescription medications daily can help prevent the onset of a migraine. When using pain killers too often that can cause an additional headache, and then they become less effective for when you have other pain, or another headache. Eating a healthy diet and exercising, keeping a log of your headaches, maintaining a regular sleeping schedule, and avoiding migraine triggers are ways to be preventative and to avoid having migraine headaches. Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss all of your options, and to get migraine relief.

Colostrum is a unique type of milk that is produced by mammals during the absolute latest stages of pregnancy and just after birth. Just before giving birth and within twenty four hours afterwards, the mother’s milk becomes filled with a multitude of chemicals vital for immune systems and proteins needed for developmental growth. By harvesting this milk and consuming it, it is believed that humans can take advantage of these same benefits and boost their immune system with colostrum. There are some things to keep in mind when taking colostrum in order to ensure that you get the maximum benefits from it.

The first thing to bear in mind when taking colostrum is when it was harvested. You want to take colostrum that has been harvested within twenty four hours of birth. During this time period the milk contains the highest concentration of proteins and immune boosting chemicals. Also make sure that the colostrum has not been exposed to the pasteurization process as this can destroy many of the proteins and chemicals you are trying to provide yourself with. Also be sure that your colostrum has come from an animal that is free from hormones, pesticides, or other unnatural additives that can be harmful.

To build up your initial levels of colostrum, you should probably start with a dosage of between two and four capsules twice each day. Once you can tell a difference in your well being, moving back to the recommended maintenance dosage can be done. If you notice a diminishment in the effects of your colostrum regimen after you lower your dosage, you should move back to the higher dosage and probably stick with it instead. You will be able to feel the proteins and immune factors working in your body quickly, so it won’t be too difficult to know whether or not your regimen is working for you.

When you take colostrum, you may experience some initial side effects such as digestive issues or slight flu like symptoms. These are normal processes that occur when your body is healing itself and ridding itself of dangerous toxins. They will likely disappear after only a few short days and you will find yourself feeling better than you ever thought possible. If your discomfort becomes severe, stop taking colostrum for a few days until your levels are lower and then resume at a lower dosage. Once you find your optimum level, you’ll likely swear by colostrum for the rest of your life.

Cholesterol is a serious issue that affects many men today. You have to keep your levels in check if you want to maintain your health. If you can control your cholesterol, you can prevent heart disease and other serious issues. Diet and exercise are a great start, but they might not be enough for everyone. Consider cutting back on the junk and beefing up the exercise to get the best results. There is a lot to learn before you can kick cholesterol where it counts.

What You Should Know

Cholesterol is a waxy, soft substance that exists in all of the cells of the body. The body makes what it needs and the rest comes from food. If you eat too much food, the cholesterol will build up in the bloodstream and deposit in the walls of the arteries. That will force the heart to work harder, leading to high blood pressure and possible heart attack or stroke. High cholesterol is a big issue in men’s health and men have to take precautions to make sure that they are prepared to deal with what is going on.

Behind the Numbers

When you get a cholesterol test, doctors will measure your blood levels after a fast, typically lasting 12 hours. They will look for three different levels, measuring them by numbers. These include your total cholesterol, your LDL (bad) cholesterol and your HDL (good) cholesterol. There are numbers that will tell you how healthy you are or if you are at risk. For example, if you have levels that include:

Total 239+
LDL 190+
HDL 35 or less

you could be at high risk of developing heart disease. If you have levels that are

Total 200-239
LDL 130-190
HDL 35-60

you have a borderline risk of heart disease developing. There are almost 100 million adults that have high enough total cholesterol to put them at risk for heart disease. Many people don’t even know that they have a problem until it is too late.

Lower the Bad

There are plenty of ways to get rid of bad cholesterol. The most obvious way is to eat less of it in your diet. Also, exercising more, eating more vegetables and fewer burgers, and eating unsaturated fats will help lower your LDL levels. You need to exercise for at least 30 minutes per day to keep your health in check. People who can’t lower their bad cholesterol on their own may have to resort to medications that will help lower the numbers quicker and easier.

Of course, it does no good for you to lower your cholesterol with medication if you aren’t going to take care of yourself. Talk to your doctor about a diet and exercise plan that you can create to help you get the most from your health and improve your cholesterol numbers. There is so much to learn about this tricky little substance, but taking the time to be informed will help you get better treatment options and lower your numbers faster because you know what to do.

There are many different things that can increase your chances of having high blood pressure, and although some of them are out of your control, there are others that you will want to monitor carefully. The first cause that can increase your chance is a family heredity, and you can find this out by asking your parents or other members of the family if they have high blood pressure. Another common factor that increases the risk is aging and getting older, because if you have not lived a healthy lifestyle you are at a high risk of heart diseases.

Including a lot of sodium in your diet is another cause, along with drinking more than 2 alcoholic beverages in a single day. Being fat or overweight because you don’t exercise will cause high blood pressure, and it can also cause high cholesterol. Having high cholesterol will also increase your risks and cause it. Race has also been a proven factor since African Americans have statistically higher cases than any other race. Another possible factor is lack of potassium. There are many causes, and there are also many things that you can do to help lower your blood pressure and to get healthy.

Eating a healthy diet that is full of healthy fresh fruits and vegetable, and that includes a lot of fiber and whole grains is a great way to lower your blood pressure. You also want to be sure that you are working out and exercising every day. Talk with your doctor about the different natural things that you can do to help lower your blood pressure so that you can live a longer and healthier life, and so you can start feeling better right away. Your doctor may put you on prescription medications to help with the problem.

Although you may be on medications you still need to dedicate yourself to a lifestyle change in order to keep it down. You may not be able to change your heredity or completely eliminate your chance of having high blood pressure or high cholesterol, but you can reduce the risk greatly by eating a healthy diet, and living a healthy life. The effort that you put forward today is going to result in a lifetime of good habits, and good heart health as well. Start changing your ways today and create a plan for yourself to get on the right track.

There are a lot of issues surrounding cancer and its rapid increase of occurrence in our daily lives. The interesting thing is that evolution may be at fault. It seems that in exchange for the ability to have a developed brain, humans might have given up some of the best genes in their bodies: the ones that fight cancer cells. According to studies done by the Georgia Institute of Technology, tests have been done to show that while chimpanzees are quite effective at fighting off cancer cells, humans have lost that ability through evolution.

The focus of this study is on a process known as apoptosis, which is basically programmed cell death. It is the way that the body gets rid of bad cells automatically to keep itself healthy, and it is the best defense against cancer. According to the results, chimpanzees had much higher marks in the process of apoptosis than humans, which may be exactly why chimps have lower cancer rates and longer lives, even if they don’t have the advanced brains that humans have been graced with. The fact that chimpanzees and humans are always considered to be related in the evolutionary chain, combined with the difference in the ability to fight off cancer, caused a lot of interest in this subject. John McDonald, the man responsible for this study, was intrigued by the differences and similarities and decided to explore and see just what he could find out.

What he found out was that while chimpanzees retained the ability to process programmed cell death quite effectively, humans did not. The hypothesis is that evolution took over and utilized the brain space to help improve cognitive and other advanced brain abilities in humans, thereby sacrificing the ability to carry out programmed cell death for the sake of ‘more important’ things. Anyone who wants to read more about the results can find plenty of information in Medical Hypothesis, a journal that can be found online.

Understanding cancer has always been difficult and yet a priority for many people. The one issue that people have with this disease is that it cannot be cured and yet it cannot be prevented, either. There are certainly a lot of diseases that are not preventable or curable in the world today, but cancer is the one that is increasing in popularity as time goes on and claiming more lives of all ages with each passing year. This study could be the start of great research into how to get the body to a state where it CAN fight off cancer cells through programmed cell death, or how to compensate for the lack of that process.

Either way, understanding that our evolutionary kin are much healthier and have gotten to stay that way because their brains aren’t busy being advanced, can be both intriguing and discouraging for many people. Until a cure is found, the research will continue. For now, however, it seems that this is further proof that you really can’t have it all.

Bipolar depression is a form of mental illness classified as a mood disorder. It often appears during adolescence or young adulthood and will likely be carried with you for the rest of your life. It can be hard to treat due to its episodic nature, and many suffering from the condition have yet to be diagnosed with it. The main characteristic of bipolar disorder is the occurrence of a manic episode. Future episodes will likely follow, with an average of four in every ten years the norm. Depression will be combined with manic episodes and present itself in a unique cycle of moods that are different for each individual.

The effects of bipolar depression can be severe. Commonly, personal relationships will suffer greatly. Job loss and marital problems are highly common among sufferers of bipolar depression, and the incidence of drug abuse and alcoholism are higher as well. Many cases result in massive debts being ran up during a manic episode along with the substance abuse problems. In short, the condition leads to many problems in all facets of life that are caused by the activities performed during a manic episode. In many cases suicide can result from the shifting nature of the mood swings and even violence against others isn’t unheard of.

Treatment is effective at treating bipolar depression, most commonly with a combination of counseling and medication. A major problem, however, is the resistance to accepting treatment. Most sufferers of bipolar depression will not admit that they need to have treatment, and many experience feelings of elation and extreme happiness as a manic episode begins. As the episode progresses, however, numerous problems present themselves as judgment becomes more clouded, thoughts and opinions become more grandiose, and concentration becomes much more difficult. Numerous risk taking behaviors likely follow and lead to the countless problems mentioned before. Getting treatment is vital before a patient’s life is literally destroyed.

Numerous celebrities have recently spoken out about their battles with bipolar depression, helping to highlight this serious condition and making those suffering from it understand that they are not alone and that getting help is nothing to be ashamed of. A mental health professional will be able to diagnosis bipolar depression quickly and help recommend a course of treatment for the individual suffering from the mental illness. It is important to get treatment as early as possible before the effects of a manic episode spiral out and cause damage to all aspects of life. Treatment is available and highly successful. The only hurdle is understanding the problem and seeking help for it.
