Diet Tips for Eating Out

Going out for a nice dinner is something you deserve to do when you are on a diet. Every once and awhile, it is nice to reward yourself with a good meal that you do not have to cook. The only problem that may come up is figuring out what to order from a restaurant you go to. Picking the wrong foods could derail your diet and give you temptations to stop eating the healthy foods you need to. Listed below are some simple ways that you can make the most out of your night out.

Restaurant Tips

Diet Tips for Eating OutYou can always request a menu before you go to a restaurant so you can plan out the best meal for you. Some restaurants will have menus that break down the nutritional facts in each meal, so you could have the restaurant fax you a copy of that to help in the planning. Pick a meal that has grilled food, whole grain pasta, steamed vegetables, or something else along those lines. Those foods will be healthier for you.
When you get to the restaurant, order water instead of a drink. This will save you money and reduce your chances of going off your diet. Avoid the bread basket, or simply ask the waiter not to send one. Then you will not be tempted. Split a meal with someone to further save costs and reduce your portion sizes. Try to skip dessert if you can, but otherwise split it with someone to minimize your sugar intake.

Fast Food Tips

Fast food restaurants are starting to offer more foods for dieters nowadays, many of which are even endorsed by well known weight loss organizations. You could get a kid’s meal to reduce your portions, or you could get something grilled on the menu instead of fried. If the fast food restaurant has salads or apples you can eat for a side, choose those over French fries. Ask for your food to be “dry,” meaning that it has no sauce added. Then you can add your own low fat versions of whatever you want. Skip the soda and opt for water, juice, or diet drinks instead. Then you may be able to eat well even at a fast food joint.

Party Tips

Eating at a party is different than eating anywhere else. You do not have to fear party foods though. You just have to know how to work around them. Offer to bring the snacks for the party so you automatically know what is in each of them. You can avoid the foods that would go against your diet. Drink water while at the party, and try to look for vegetable trays too much on instead of the chips and dip. Focus on socializing with friends to avoid the food table, and that should keep you on the right dietary track.
