Simple lifestyle and habit changes actually have a huge impact on the health and happiness of people, especially women. In fact, several researches highlight the importance of how simple changes in the things that you do could dramatically improve your physical and mental health.

If you do not want to wallow in self-destructing practices and habits, you better read on so you can learn what healthy and wonderful women do to make themselves more successful and happier.

Exercise Your Mind

Although it is important to go to the gym and exercise your biceps, abdomens and other muscles in the body, you also should have time to exercise your brain muscles. Mind exercises, which is now known as neurobics, is important in keeping your brain buzzing and prevent mental aging.

What you can do to strengthen your mind is to do minor changes in how you do things. Try dressing in the dark once in a while or cooking food that is foreign or unfamiliar to you. These changes could let your brain respond to new situations. Reading, learning a new language or skill, and doing puzzles and crosswords are also helpful in boosting your brainpower.

Learn To Let Go

A lot of women dwell in the past and harbor a lot of negative and guilty feelings. Most of the time, these ill emotions can lead women to feel depressed and unhappy. If you want to takeover your life and be happy, all you need to do is confront your guilt and negative feelings. Learn why you are feeling this way and what you can do about it. Once you have already processed your feelings and thoughts, you have to learn how to let it go. Everybody commits mistakes and has done things that they are not proud of. However, only those who have learned from these mistakes are the ones who truly emerge as wiser and happier.

Love What You Do

Figures show that over 84% of adults in the US are not happy with their work. If you fall into this category, then you are giving yourself another reason to feel stressed out and fatigue. If you are not happy about what you do, then it may be time to look for a new one.

However, before you submit a resignation letter, you first need to really consider the reasons why you are unhappy. Do you feel overworked, unappreciated, underpaid or underutilized? If you answered yes, then consider what you can do about these things in your present situation. Try to figure out what you have to do more to excel in your job and to get recognized. Ditching your old job does not guarantee that your new work will be like a trip to heaven.

Find What Workout Works For You

If all your friends are into Pilates, you really do not have to be in the same class if you absolutely abhor being stuck inside a small room for an hour. What you need to do is to determine what types of activities you love and find a workout that will fit or go with such activities. For example, if you love the outdoor, then you can probably try hiking, cycling, walking around the park or mountain climbing as fitness activities of your choice.

Do Something For Yourself

Quite a number of women feel guilty whenever they spend for themselves. But if you want to be happy and healthy, you should never forget about your needs too. Sometimes, spending time to make yourself more attractive can also boost your confidence. Don’t be afraid to have a massage or a facial to ease stress a bit. Also, don’t skimp on products that will help make your skin smoother like moisturizers and lotions or get rid of your flaws such as wrinkles, pimples and cellulites.

Speaking of cellulite, one product that is effective in banishing orange-peel-looking skin is Cellutherm. For more information, visit http://www.cellutherm.com/.

Almost all women can and should be physically active during pregnancy. Talk to your health care provider first, particularly if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, anemia, bleeding, or other disorders, or if you are obese or underweight.

Whether or not you were active before you were pregnant, ask your health care provider about a level of exercise that is safe for you.

Aim to do at least 30 minutes of a moderate activity (one that makes you breathe harder but does not overwork or overheat you) on most days of the week.

Regular, moderate physical activity during pregnancy may:

Help you and your baby to gain the proper amounts of weight.

Reduce the discomforts of pregnancy such as backaches, leg cramps, constipation, bloating, and swelling.

Improve your mood, energy level, and feelings about the way you look.

Strengthen your muscles and improve your blood flow.

Improve your sleep.

Help you have an easier, shorter labor.

Help you to recover from delivery and return to a healthy weight faster.

Follow these safety precautions while being active during your pregnancy:

Choose moderate activities that are unlikely to injure you, such as walking, aqua aerobics, swimming, yoga, or using a stationary bike.

Stop exercising when you start to feel tired, and never exercise until you are exhausted or overheated.

Drink plenty of water.

Wear comfortable clothing that fits well and supports and protects your breasts.

Stop exercising if you feel dizzy, short of breath, pain in your back, swelling, numbness, sick to your stomach, or if your heart is beating too fast or at an uneven rate.

by Cathy Taylor
The mid-life phenomenon known as menopause and the stresses of anxiety go hand in hand. Panic attacks, rushes of energy, burning in the chest, unusual vibrations throughout the body, and warm sensations are some of the physical effects you may feel under this condition.

When menopause hits, there is a greater chance women will go through anxiety and depression.

Christian Northrop talks about this phenomenon in her book, Wisdom of Menopause, where if a woman has repressed something in her life, she won’t be able to get past menopause employing the same tactics. For example, unexpressed anger will find its way out and sometimes in unusual or uncomfortable ways.

In what is often referred to as a ¨midlife crisis,¨ this time of life forces women to re-evaluate themselves and the role(s) they play as they are getting older. And, often times we are not comfortable with what we find. A little voice in the back of our head is saying, “If you don’t make changes now … you never will!” Our hormonal imbalances (due to decreased estrogen levels) can contribute to feelings of depression or make us feel plain ‘indifference.’ Even if menopause isn’t actually causing these conditions, it can heighten underlying anxiety and bring it to the surface.

Anxiety is an individual’s prolonged feeling of dread and worry with no particular reason behind it. It’s uncomfortable and causes stress particularly on the body. It can be triggered by problems in everyday life like paying the bills and work. Although worrying about these things for a normal person has its ceiling of severity, menopausal women suffering from anxiety tend to think about their problems excessively.

When anxiety finally hits its highest peak, it is often called a panic attack. Panic attacks are debilitating episodes of fright and fear that include chest pains, fear of death, and shaking. In what is called being ¨psychosocially¨ depressed, women have negative beliefs and attitudes in regards to getting older, assuming unwanted roles such as caretaker, and responding negatively to impatient husbands who might demand sex.

Being depressed during the duration of this condition has a lot to do with their overall psychological well-being prior to menopause. Women who have continuous anxiety and depression beforehand are more likely to suffer worse cases of anxiety during this latter phase of life. If life-long imbalances have not been healed, menopause may exacerbate the situation. We might feel unable to perform ¨female duties¨, contributing to feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness. Research has found that consistent regular physical activity (i.e. exercise) before menopause has been scientifically proven to lessen the possibility of anxiety symptoms during this transition. It’s also helpful to avoid drinking caffeine-loaded liquids, sleep deprivation, and stimulant use.

Psychiatric consultations are highly recommended for anxiety sufferers under menopause. An experienced counsellor and/or therapist can help us recover and evaluate our lives including healing emotional imbalances. It is a great time to refocus our attention toward new activities and roles. As is common with anxiety, feelings of worthlessness, fright, and even suicidal tendencies can occur. In this case, antidepressants may be prescribed. Coping with all of the physical changes, assuming new roles, possibly facing many of our fears for the first time, and generally waking up to the fact that ¨life just isn’t what it used to be¨ are all realizations that contribute to anxiety in older women. In these times, it is important to maintain focus and concentrate on the positive things in life. Although it can be hard, it can be done.

Having a plethora of life responsibilities and obligations during menopause can create stress, and having an ´excess´ of this stress can cause adrenal fatigue. Anxiety in menopause sufferers results from hormonal imbalances. In the menstrual cycle, ovulation causes progesterone (which has soothing effects on the mind and body) to be released. Irregular cycles are grounds for anxiety build-up, as a result of the lack of this ¨happy hormone.¨ All of these conditions can be treated with alternative therapies such as natural progesterone cream.

But why do some women go through menopause and barely notice a difference? One consensus among medical doctors theorizes that it has a lot to do with women’s self-esteem and self-confidence. One thing is for sure, if you are having trouble with either of these, you’ll get a chance to deal with them now. One thing menopause is great at, and that is bringing out our unresolved issues. And we all know how anxious that can make us.

by Vicki Rackner MD
The realization hit Natalie like a ton of bricks. Her mother, Joann, had literally died of embarrassment! Joann had noticed blood in her stool almost a year before she was diagnosed with colon cancer. At first she told herself it must have been those beets she ate. Then she thought it was most likely her hemorrhoids, although she had not had a flair-up of hemorrhoids since Natalie’s birth 52 years earlier.

The truth was that Joann was embarrassed to talk with her doctor about private topics such as her bowel habits. She didn’t raise the concern with her doctor until she had bloating, cramping and abdominal pain. This led to the diagnosis of colon cancer that ultimately took her life. Natalie’s brother-in-law, who was a nurse, wondered whether Joann would still be alive if she had told her doctor about the blood in her stool when she first noticed it.

Let’s face it; certain topics are embarrassing to talk about with your doctor. I
call them the 5 P’s:

Peeing

Pooping

Paying

Procreating

Psychic moaning

Although at first blush the challenge of talking with your doctor about embarrassing medical topics seems simple enough, for some people, it can cause significant suffering.

Hillary, for example, had what’s now called a shy bladder. She had not used a public restroom in over 20 years. She was too embarrassed to talk with her doctor about this; instead, she remained a prisoner to her bladder.

Ed was laid off from work and could no longer afford his asthma medications. Instead of talking with his doctor about it, he decided to do without He wound up in the emergency room with an asthma attack that could have been avoided with regular medication.

Tom had some sexual side effects from his blood pressure medicine. Instead of talking with his doctor and getting a different medicine, he just stopped taking it. The doctors wonder if this might have contributed to his heart attack.

Jerry noticed his loss of appetite and sleeping problems as his caregiver responsibilities for his aging father mounted. He wondered if he might be depressed, but dismissed the thought because real men don’t get depressed.

Imagine how each of these stories might have been different if these individuals who suffered in silence could have talked with their doctors.

Here are 6 tips that can help you talk with your doctor about embarrassing medical
topics:

1. Own the embarrassment.

Say to your doctor, “This is a taboo topic in our family, so it’s hard for me to ask. Is it normal to have a funny smell coming from your belly button?”

2. Find the words.

Your doctor speaks a specialized language acquired through years of training. Sometimes patients are embarrassed because they don’t know the “right words” or have a hard time describing the problem.

Remember that your job is to communicate. You don’t need to know the fancy words to do that. If a patient said to me, “Dad had an operation on the dingle-ball thing at the back of his throat”, I would know just what he meant. And, the patient would seem relieved when I said, “Oh, you mean the uvula.”

The best way to make sure you and your doctor understand each other is to use anatomically correct words. Get a basic anatomy atlas. Use anatomically correct words with your children.

3. Practice saying the words.

Sometimes embarrassing words can be hard to get out of your mouth. Gertrude, a 90-year-old patient said to me, “You youngsters don’t understand how much things have changed. When I got breast cancer in the 1962, the words ‘breast’ and ‘cancer’ were not uttered in polite company.” Some words are still embarrassing to say. Practice saying these words out loud when you’re alone! That will make it easier to say them at the doctor’s office.

4. Find the right person to ask.

You may have an easy rapport with the nurse or physician’s assistant at your doctor’s office. You can bring up the sensitive topic with them. Say, “Trish, could you please give the doctor a heads up. I want to know why I should say no to those steroids my buddies at the gym are offering me. I would love to look like they do.”

5. Find the right way to ask.

Maybe it’s easier for you to drop a note or a cartoon to your doctor rather than ask in person. Find the style that works best for you.

6. Remember that your doctor is there to help you, not to judge you.

Your doctor has heard it all before. I promise! Your doctor will not think less of you for asking an embarrassing medical question; in fact, your doctor with think more of you for overcoming your fear and helping you take charge of your health.

Gestational diabetes is a temporary condition that occurs during pregnancy. Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before, but who have high blood sugar levels during pregnancy, are said to have gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnancies, making it one of the top health concerns related to pregnancy.

What is the cause of gestational diabetes?

While no-one really knows the cause, there are some factors that is might increase the risk of developing gestational diabetes. These include:

A family history of diabetes

Obesity in the woman

Having had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy.

Older maternal age (over the age of 30).

A previous delivery of a large (greater than 9 pounds) baby .

What are the risks of gestational diabetes?

High sugar levels in your blood can be unhealthy for both you and your baby. If a woman had gestational diabetes during pregnancy, there is an increased risk of developing diabetes for both mother and child. Babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes have a greater change of developing diabetes, but there is also some other risks involved, such as macrosomia, or a “fat” baby. Babies with macrosomia face health problems of their own, including damage to their shoulders during birth, or a higher risk for breathing problems.

Treating gestational diabetes

In most cases, gestational diabetes is managed by diet and exercise, and goes away after the baby is born. But because gestational diabetes can hurt you and your baby, it is important to start treatment quickly. You should consult your doctor for special meal plans and scheduled physical activity.

There is no reason to panic

While gestational diabetes is a cause for concern, the good news with the correct diet and exercise, you can keep your blood glucose levels under control, and give a healthy start for your baby.

by Janet Martin
If there is one thing that majority of women all over the world want, it is to have plump and perky breasts. Many believe that having full and ample boobs will give them the confidence they need to find partners in life or even get ahead in their chosen profession. Others think that the essence of being a woman is hinged on having gigantic chests.

In order to achieve this goal, however, a lot of women are turning into breast enhancement surgeries, which are invasive procedures that can pose a lot of risks especially if performed by incompetent and unscrupulous individuals. If you are one of the women who feel the need to go under the knife just to get big boobs, then you need to be informed that surgery is not the only way to effectively and safely achieve your goal.

If you want to know how to make your small breasts look at least twice bigger, then you need to read on and learn.

Know Your Fit

Many women do not care what they wear underneath their clothes. In reality, however, your undergarments are very important not only in protecting your private parts, but also in making your body look better and sexier.

The same is true with your choice of brassiere. If you want to have fuller and bigger looking boobs, then the first thing you have to do is to know your fit well. Since your body is constantly changing, you need to check on your bra size at least every two years. Although you can measure the size of your bra by yourself, it would still be best to have an expert do that for you. Moreover, splurge on yourself a bit and get yourself one or two bras from a reputable lingerie store so that store staff there could help you pick out the best brassiere for your size and shape.

Don’t Be Afraid To Use Push Up

People with full breasts know that push up bra is their ally against gravity. Even if you have small breasts, you have to understand that gravity can also pull your small protrusions southward. To prevent this from happening, it would be best to wear push ups. Besides, a bra with an underwire can make your breasts look perkier. You may also want to try an undergarment with pads because they can give you the cleavage that you deserve.

Know How To Dress Up Accordingly

If you have small breasts, it would not be wise to wear t-shirts with very deep or low necklines. This will only enhance the fact that you are wanting in that aspect. Instead, look for t-shirts that have high or irregular necklines (plus do not forget to wear padded push-up bras). If you are slim, you can also wear sleeveless shirts and fitting tops. Wearing blouses with ruffles, laces, wide lapels, or breast pockets is also helpful in giving the illusion of larger boobs.

Know That Exercise Is Important

Even if exercise will not really help you have plumper breasts, especially because your breast is made up of fats and not muscles, it is still important since it will help strengthen your back and give you the right posture. Furthermore, well-developed chest muscles will also help lift your boobs a little bit. Proper posture plus a slightly perky breast will surely give you an illusion of ample boobs.

If you still feel unhappy about your breast size, even after following the tips above, you can opt to try natural breast enhancement creams. Just make sure that you choose a cream that is well recommended and safe. One breast enhancement product that can give you plumper breasts is Clevastin. If you want to know more about Clevastin, simply visit http://www.clevastin.com/.

When it comes to beauty and fashion, there are really no hard and fast rules. What may be beautiful during the time of your mom may no longer be beautiful or fashionable at present. Besides, you will definitely look old if you hold on to the beauty tenets from decades ago.

In order to update your look, you need to read new beauty magazines. These reading materials will surely guide you on what is in and what is not. Here are some old rules that beauty gurus are now starting to break:

Old Rule # 1. The Best Place To Spray Your Scent Is At The Back Of Your Ears

According to new scent experts, the best place to apply on your cologne or perfume is on your body’s center. This will help make you smell appealing without becoming overpowering. Thus, instead of spraying behind your ears, you might want to put on your fragrance between your breasts or on your collarbone. The heat of your body will make the scent warm so it will last longer. If you have long hair, you may also want to spray some fragrance on your hair.

Old Rule # 2. Conditioner Is A No-no For Those With Oily Hair

A lot of people with oily hair think that they do not need to condition their hair because they have ample oil to keep their hair bouncy and beautiful. However, it is important to note that oil is usually concentrated on the scalp. So you can have dry ends even if you have oily hair. What you can do, if you have oily hair, is to use an oil-free conditioner.

Old Rule # 3. Women With Red Hair Should Not Wear Red Lips

There was a time when red lipsticks only had a base of blue. So back then, women with red hair who used red lipstick appeared to have a complexion that is just too pinkish. However, nowadays, there are a lot of red shades to choose from. In fact, redheads may want to try on red lipsticks with brownish or golden tinge because these colors can improve the complexion of redheads.

Old Rule # 4. Don’t Pluck Above Your Brow

It is important to stress that hair stragglers located above your eyebrows may create a shadow. This will make your brows looking unclean. For a more defined look, go ahead and do not be afraid to pluck the hair on top of your brows. In order to prevent committing mistakes, you can put on a white makeup on your groomed eyebrows. All hair that sticks out of the white makeup can be removed and tweezed.

Old Rule # 6. Say Absolutely No To Blue Eyeshadow

Bright blue eye shadow became popular during the 80’s. As a result, women who used to paint their eyes with this color looked old and dated. However, blue is making a comeback. In order to make your look fresh and updated, try blue shadows with smoky or silvery hues. However, do not go overboard. Make sure that your look is still soft.

However, if you have eye bags or skin discoloration under the eyes, your blue eye shadow might give you a black-eye look. To help prevent eye bags and raccoon eyes, you may want to use an all-natural eye cream, such as Eyevive. Visit http://www.eyevive.com/ for more details.

Spring is in the air and … summer is around the corner! I know a lot of people have been contacting me about getting themselves and their bodies ready for da-da- DUM… BATHING SUIT SEASON.

For those of us who live in the more northern part of the country and did not go anywhere tropical during the last six months, this can be an intimidating time. Our skin (and everything underneath it) has been tucked away, protected and hidden beneath beautiful sweaters and warm scarves. Now it is time to let every part of you take a deep breath of summer sun. Here we go!

Bathing Suit Season – a Nutritional Guide

Two important concepts to keep in mind when looking at your food in preparation for your summer self is 1) to start, try to love your body right where it is now 2) be willing to allow your food habits to change. Take into consideration that your body WANTS to change what it is eating. As mentioned in previous editions the springtime is the perfect time for the body to “go light”. If you listen closely I bet you can hear your body asking for different food, lighter food, and less food. To allow yourself to make these changes follow these guidelines:

1) Do Not Skip Meals – Eat small meals or snacks containing some PROTEIN every few hours to keep blood-sugar levels steady. Do not to let more than 3 hours go between eating. This will help keep your blood sugar stable and avoid ravenous hunger which often leads to overeating. Low blood sugar and extreme hunger are a dangerous combination.

2) Keep Healthy Snacks Around – whether you like crunch, salt or sweet, take care and prep ahead to have some energy rich™ food available for yourself. The worst type of pre-summer sabotage is stopping somewhere UNKNOWN for just A LITTLE SOMETHING to HOLD YOU OVER. Use some of these Healthy Snack Ideas or create your own.

Crunch

lite popcorn, or plain popcorn popped in paper bag in microwave/ or use coconut oil to pop in a covered pan

frozen grapes

1 – 2 hard pretzels – the large Bavarian variety

apple

carrots – particularly the super sweet, organic baby carrots

Sweet

organic carrots (category cross over on this one!)

organic yogurt and over ripe fruit – all kinds of flavors to enjoy

fresh, whole fruit

leftover grains – (i.e. brown rice, quinoa, spelt) drizzle maple syrup and cinnamon; add soy milk and bananas, heat and enjoy warm oatmeal-like porridge, cook grains in fruit juice (i.e. apple)

smoothies – mix any of the following – whatever you have in the kitchen: fruit, ice…soy milk, yogurt, protein powder, carob powder, fruit juice, etc…

Salty

tortilla chips and fresh salsa – try whole grain chips such as “Garden of Eatin” Brand in health food stores and try freshly made salsa vs. shelved and processed stuff.

pickles

fresh lime/lemon juice as seasonings or in beverage

3) Dandelion Greens – That’s right. This pesky flower has leaves that are a magic component of winter weight loss. This common “weed” of the composite family is a powerful restorative to the liver. It’s also rich in minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, selenium and zinc, as well as vitamins B1, B2, B3,and C. Ounce for ounce, dandelion contains more carotene than carrots. Dandelion also cleanses the blood and liver (the organ most associated with Spring in Traditional Chinese Medicine), and increases bile production. Go clean to get lean!

4) Fruits - Fruits are cool and juicy, so they get you the water you need to stay hydrated and they also provide the vitamins and nutrients that fat-free snack foods don’t. Eating a lot of fruit does not work for everyone, but if you are a person who does well with fruit “Spring Lightening” can include eating a lot of fruits.
