Beauty & Skincare Tips : Vitamins for the Eyes
Just like a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals is good for your body, it is good for your eyes too. Many eye doctors will recommend taking vitamins to ensure healthy eyes and strong, long lasting eyesight. When your diet is rich in vitamins, you can prevent eye diseases and enhance your vision.
Studies have shown that when you take vitamins for the eyes, your vision will improve because the natural deterioration that occurs within the eyes due to aging will slow down or stop. There have been a few specific vitamins that have been identified because of their ability to be therapeutic for eyes.
Vitamin A is known as the queen of the eye vitamins. When you take Vitamin A, you are reducing your risk of cataracts and night blindness. Actually, you can improve your night vision by taking Vitamin A or eating foods rich in Vitamin A. Carrots, liver, and sweet potatoes all have a high concentration of Vitamin A.
Studies have shown that Vitamin C reduces the risk of cataracts, slows deterioration in macular degeneration, and seems to reduce pressure in Glaucoma. It is also an antioxidant, which stops healthy eye tissue from being destroyed by the sun. Vitamin C is found in many fruits and vegetables including broccoli, oranges, rosehips, and strawberries.
Finally, Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that reduces the risk for cataracts and macular degeneration. Vitamin E is oily and can be found in most nuts, including the diet friendly hazelnuts and almonds. But these are also high in fat, so only a small amount should be consumed at a time.
Omega-3 fatty acids appear to protect the eyes from degenerative diseases that occur in people’s eyes as they get older, including macular degeneration. These can be found in fish oil pills purchased at the pharmacy, or by eating fish.
Antioxidants are similar to vitamins and also play a role in eye health. Antioxidants actually counter the effect of oxidation of the tissue in and around the eye. Oxidation is when over time, the sun destroys the tissues in and around the eye. Oxidation will cause proteins in the eye to group together, which form cataracts. Cataracts are cloudy because the proteins are so tightly clumped together, and it impedes vision. The body naturally produces antioxidants and also uses antioxidants from the food and supplements we take in order to fight oxidation in the eyes. Vitamins are full of antioxidants, which is probably why they work so well on keeping the eyes healthy and strong.
When a person does not have enough antioxidants in their body, carotenoid is used instead. The body creates carotenoid, which is a yellow pigment, to help fight cataracts. It attracts the blue light, which is implicated in the oxidation process of the eye, and because it’s yellow in color it can nullify some of the damaging effects of that blue light. Ensuring you have enough vitamins and antioxidants in your body at all times will ensure superior eye health.
