Beauty & Skincare Tips – Treatment of Dark Circles Under the Eyes

Millions of people experience dark circles under the eyes and it is one of the most common beauty and skincare complaints across America. In order to get rid of dark circles under the eyes, you must first determine the cause of the darkened skin, which can vary from person to person. There is a large array of treatments for those daunting circles, but many of them are treatments to eliminate the circles after they appear. Not many treatments actually prevent the dark circles from appearing in the first place.

Treatment of Dark Circles Under the EyesMost people notice a slight darkening of the skin of their eyelid, which is typical due to shadows created by your brow and also because the skin around the eye area is significantly thinner that the rest of the skin on your face. But many people are concerned with the skin underneath the eyes that is significantly darker, sometimes even purplish colored, and very noticeable.

Genetics plays a role in the reason why some people have dark circles under the eyes because thin skin is a genetic trait. The skin on your eyelid is the thinnest skin on your entire body. The purplish color that appears underneath your eyes is actually the eyelid muscle showing through the thin skin. Skin experts recommend using cover up makeup as a treatment of dark circles under the eyes. Experts also recommend using Retin A cream and frequent microdermabrasion because over time it will build new collagen and the skin will thicken a bit.

Everyone has capillaries and blood vessels in the skin around their eyes. For some people, these capillaries are very noticeable and can cause the skin to appear darker underneath their eyes. If you gently pull on the skin under your eyelid and see a lot of tiny blue and red lines, those are the capillaries. When a person has an abundance of these capillaries, their skin will appear bluish purple underneath the eye. Intense Pulsed Light therapy and laser therapy are two ways to reduce the appearance of these capillaries, thus reducing the darkened tint to the area under the eyes. This treatment of dark circles under the eyes can be dangerous and requires a protective shield over the eyeball to ensure the laser doesn’t hit the eye itself as it will damage the retina and cause vision problems.

Then there is hyper pigmentation, which means that there is too much pigment in the skin around the eye, which is the most common reason why people have dark circles under the eyes. Most of the time, hyper pigmentation is increased when in the sun, so using sunscreen and wearing a hat and sunglasses can help prevent it. You can also use bleaching creams like Epiquin, Obagi Blender 5, or other similar products to reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. Some medical professionals will also use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments for dark circles under the eyes due to hyper pigmentation.
